Tsuyoshi Abe (阿部 力 (あべ つよし) Abe Tsuyoshi, born February 13, 1982 in Heilongjiang, China), also known as Li Zhen Dong (Chinese: 李振冬; pinyin: Lǐ Zhèndōng), is a Chinese-Japanese actor. He moved to Japan at the age of nine and later studied acting in Beijing. Abe eventually returned to Japan where he signed with Horipro in 2004.

He costarred in Hana Yori Dango, Hana Yori Dango Returns, and Hana Yori Dango Final as Akira Mimasaka.

Early life[]

Abe was born on February 13, 1982 in Heilongjiang, China. In 1991, he moved to Japan at the age of nine and changed his name to Tsuyoshi Abe, after becoming a naturalized citizen. His family name comes from his grandmother, who is Japanese. He speaks Mandarin and Japanese fluently.[1][2]

In 2000, Abe left Japan to study at the Beijing Film Academy. He was chosen to star in the film, Public Toilet, while he was still a student. He returned to Japan and joined the talent agency, Horipro, in 2004.[3] His break came in 2005 with his supporting role in the hit drama, Hana Yori Dango, along side Mao Inoue and Jun Matsumoto.[1] Abe returned to play Akira Mimasaka in Hana Yori Dango Returns (2007)[4] and Hana Yori Dango Final (2008).[5]

He married Chinese actress, Shi Ke (史可, born May 4, 1979) on April 26, 2009. The couple met in 2006 during the shooting of the Chinese film, Stand in Love (不完全恋人). Their relationship was long-distanced for over two years.[6][7] His Hana Yori Dango costars Mao Inoue, Jun Matsumoto, and Shun Oguri sent their well wishes.[8] Abe and his wife have allegedly been separated since 2012 and have not been in contact since she returned to China.[9][10]

Notes[]

  • Abe's Chinese heritage was shown in Hana Yori Dango and its sequels, when he spoke Mandarin on occasion. Similarly, Vanness Wu, who portrayed his Taiwanese counterpart, was born in the United States and often spoke English phrases in Meteor Garden.
  • He celebrated his twenty-sixth birthday while filming in Hong Kong for Hana Yori Dango Final (2008). Abe was given a bouquet of flowers by the crew.[12]
  • Shota Matsuda posted a photo of him with Abe and Shun Oguri celebrating his marriage in April 2018. He wrote in the caption that Jun Matsumoto took the picture.[13][14]

  • In 2017, an alleged suicide note of the late Japanese musician Tenn was released. In it were allegations that Tenn's wife Takako Uehara had had an affair with Abe.[15][16]
