"The Dawning of a New Day" (
Tsukasa Domyoji and Shigeru Okawahara are now officially dating. Tsukushi Makino pretends to be happy for them, though she is actually hurting. Later, she is talking with Rui Hanazawa, when she sees Tsukasa kiss Shigeru.
Plot[]
Shigeru Okawahara reveals to Tsukushi Makino that Tsukasa Domyoji has asked her to go out with him. She tells her "I didn't realize how much I'd come to love Tsukasa." Tsukushi hugs and congratulates her. She silently says to herself "I won't have any regrets." However, now by herself, Tsukushi says "I thought that this would solve everything" but realizes that there is an "ache in [her] heart." She holds one of her toys, wondering "This is for the best, right?" The next morning, Makiko Endo greets Tsukushi on the way to school. She asks her if something is wrong, but Tsukushi lies saying that she is only "out of it" from staying up late. Tsukushi decides to be in a better mood and runs up to school with Makiko.
At lunch, Tsukushi reports to Akira Mimasaka and Sojiro Nishikado about Tsukasa asking Shigeru to be his girlfriend. Both guys are in disbelief that Tsukasa would say anything like that. They picture Tsukasa asking out a monkey, a mental image that they both find "scary." Tsukushi tells them "You should be happy for him," leading Sojiro to question her attitude. Before she can say something back, Kazuya Aoike runs up to her carrying his lunch. They are sharing their lunch when Tsukasa joins them. Kazuya excitedly asks him "Is it true you've got a girlfriend?" which Tsukasa then confirms. Trying to appear normal, Tsukushi congratulates him. Tsukasa answers "I don't want your congratulations."
Thinking "The instant I said 'Congratulations,' something ended," Tsukushi remembers all of the times she and Tsukasa had kissed or embraced. She is thinking of it late that afternoon, when Urara Aoi interrupts her thoughts by making a comment on the clematis flowers dying. Urara tells her "But in death, it gains a new freedom. And it can leave this hill to bloom somewhere else." Tsukushi wonders whether the flower does not want to leave but "has to." Urara answers "Yes, a flower can't choose its own fate." Tsukushi stares at the flowers and pictures Tsukasa and Shigeru. She thinks "My wish was to be free of Domyoji," but shakes her head to banish any thoughts of him. Tsukushi then says "It's about to begin, a new day."
Sometime later, Shigeru is yelling after Tsukasa who is walking too fast for her to keep up. He becomes annoyed and shouts at her, causing her to cry and say "This isn't a date!" Feeling guilty, Tsukasa asks her "What should I do?" Now happy, Shigeru tells him to stand next to her and match her stride. She holds his arm and reminds him that he promised to "learn to love [her]." Shigeru asks him "When?" but he only says "Eventually." That night, Kaede Domyoji asks Nishida "Are things going well?" He reports that Shigeru is the "more aggressive" one currently, but that Tsukasa is meeting her regularly. Kaede then asks about Tsukushi, who Nishida says is not seeing Tsukasa outside of school. He adds in a "but."
Shigeru greets the Makinos at their home. Chieko Makino says "What's with that girl?" out of earshot, but invites her to eat with them anyway. After dinner, Shigeru complains to Tsukushi about Tsukasa. Tsukushi thinks "Why do I have to listen to this?" Shigeru says "I wonder if he still loves you," but Tsukushi gives her several assurances. Feeling better, she apologizes for being "impatient." The next day, Tsukushi tells Rui Hanazawa about Shigeru and asks him to talk with Tsukasa. Rui refuses to get involved. The two then hear Tsukasa and Shigeru arguing below them. She orders him to kiss her, citing her insecurities about his feelings for Tsukushi. After getting over his shock, Tsukasa kisses her.
