Sumie Sasaki (佐々木 すみ江 (ささき すみえ) Sasaki Sumie, June 22, 1928 – February 17, 2019) was a veteran actress from Japan. She portrayed Tama in Hana Yori Dango Returns and Hana Yori Dango Final. Sasaki reprised her role in the 2018 sequel, Hana Nochi Hare. She died of pneumonia at the age of ninety in 2019.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Sasaki was born on June 22, 1928 in Tokyo, Japan. She has a younger brother and sister.[1] In 1951, she married journalist Akira Aoki (青木 彰). The two remained married until Aoki's death of lung cancer in 2003.[2]

In 1951, Sasaki joined a theater troupe and acted in her first play, Sono Imoto (その妹). She won an award for her performance in Desire Under the Elms in 1954.[3]

Death[]

On the morning of February 17, 2019, Sasaki was rushed to a hospital in Tokyo to be treated for pneumonia. She passed away at 12:59 PM at the age of ninety.[4] Her relatives chose not to disclose her death to the public until after the funeral. Sasaki's agency revealed her cause of death on February 20.[5]
