"Study Abroad!?" (留学するしかない?! (りゅうがくするしかない) Ryūgaku Suru Shikanai?!) is an installment of the anime adaptation of Yoko Kamio's Boys Over Flowers. The episode first aired on August 10, 1997 in Japan. It was followed by the forty-ninth episode, titled "Our New Relationship," on August 17.

Rui Hanazawa and Shizuka Todo are reunited with plans to return to France together. Tsukushi Makino decides to make a change as well and enters a program to study abroad. Some of her friends, however, do not want her to go.

Plot[]

Shizuka Todo stands in front of Rui Hanazawa saying "I've come for you." Tsukushi Makino tells Shigeru Okawahara that they should leave. Slow on the uptake, Shigeru has to be dragged away. Tsukushi drops one of her toys as she closes the door. Opening the door slightly to retrieve it, Tsukushi overhears their conversation. Shizuka asks Rui to come back with her, confessing that she has been thinking of him constantly. Not looking at her, Rui says "I can't do anything for you." She smiles and tells him "You can play your violin for me." Suddenly, Rui pulls Shizuka towards him and holds her. He then says "From now on, I'll always stay by your side." Rui smiles softly as he promises to never run from her again.

Walking through the halls, Tsukushi imagines Rui's smile and thinks "I've never seen Rui Hanazawa look like that before." Shigeru asks "Who was that?," leading Tsukushi to describe Shizuka. A sad look comes across Tsukushi's face as she wishes she were as honest as Shizuka. Shigeru then slaps her on the back, declaring "Don't mope just because you've lost your love." Tsukushi is about to correct her, when Shigeru spots Tsukasa Domyoji. She excitedly tells him about Shizuka. When he attempts to pass by, Tsukushi stops him and tells him not to "interrupt them." This leads to an argument between the two, which Shigeru tries to break up by inviting them for tea. They both refuse and storm off in opposite directions.

Tsukushi finds Yuriko Asai at the school's notice board along with her friends and Kazuya Aoike. They are talking about the exchange student program and wondering whether they should take the exam for it. When Tsukushi walks up to read the notice, Kazuya suggests for her to enter. She is on the fence about it until speaking to Rui the next day. He reveals his plans to return to France with Shizuka. Seeing that Rui has changed, Tsukushi decides that she also wants to change. She then immediately turns in her application for the exchange program. Later, Tsukushi informs Shigeru about her decision. She complains that she will be lonely without her there. Tsukushi, however, replies "I've made up my mind."

Sojiro Nishikado and Akira Mimasaka decide to plan a going-away party for Rui. Shigeru then runs right up to Tsukasa to tell him about Tsukushi entering the exchange program. She begs him to stop her, but he refuses. Tsukushi overhears him claiming that she will not be able to pass anyway and promising to "do a lap around campus on [his] hands" if she does. She confronts him, saying "Don't forget what you just promised." She walks away, followed by Shigeru. From that moment on, Tsukushi begins feverishly studying. Later, Rui questions her about her plans. She explains "I want to go far away and reinvent myself, too." He asks "Is that really what you want?" and advises her to "take stock of [her] feelings."

At home, Tsukushi continues studying the night before the exam. She remembers Rui's advice, but believes she is not running away from anything. There is a knock at her door, which she answers to find Shigeru, Kazuya, Sojiro, Akira, and Sakurako Sanjo. They are there to celebrate her passing, though she points out that the exam is tomorrow. The celebrating goes on for nearly the whole night, leaving Tsukushi unable to sleep. She heads to the exam feeling exhausted. There she finds Tsukasa, who offers her a cup of coffee to help her stay awake. He asks "Will you really go, if you pass?" She shouts "Of course, I'm going!" before walking in the exam room. Some days later, Tsukushi sees her name on the pass list.
