Rei Yuzuka (柚香 光 (ゆずか れい) Yuzuka Rei, born March 5, 1992 in Suginami, Japan) is a Japanese actress. She retired from the Takarazuka Revue in March 2024 after being the Flower Troupe's top star since November 2019. After leaving the Review, she signed with Stardust Promotion. Yuzuka starred as Tsukasa Domyoji in Hana Yori Dango, a 2019 musical.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Yuzuka was born on March 5, 1992[1] in the Suginami ward of Tokyo.[2] She is the third of five siblings and the only girl.

After graduating from middle school, Yuzuka's mother found information about the Takarazuka Music School at a bookstore. Yuzuka passed the school's exam and subsequently began the two-year program.[3][4]

Career[]

Takarazuka Revue[]

In 2009, Yuzuka entered the Takarazuka Revue in the 95th class.[3] She had her official debut with the rest of her class in the Cosmos Troupe's Amour Soreha.[2] Yuzuka was placed in the Flower Troupe (花組 () ) afterwards.[5] Small roles for Yuzuka in main productions and newcomer productions (新人公演 () shinjin kouen)[6] followed, including The Rose of Versailles: Andre (2009),[7] Gubijin (2010),[8] Prelude to Love (2011),[9] and Ocean's Eleven (2013).[10] Her first starring role was in the newcomer production of The Love of the Last Tycoon (2014).[11] The same year, Yuzuka had her first starring role in a main production, Nocturne.[12] She went on to star as Der Tod in the newcomer version of Elisabeth (2014).[13] Yuzuka's last newcomer role was as the title character in 2015's The New Tale of Genji.[14]

In 2017, Yuzuka was cast as Shinobu Ijuuin, the lead role, in Haikara-san ga Toru opposite Yuki Hana.[15] She had major supporting roles in The Poe Clan,[16] Love Blooms Out on the Murasakino,[17] and Messiah in 2018.[18] The same year, she also starred in Melancholic Gigolo.[19] She appeared in a production of Casanova starring Rio Asumi in early 2019. [20] In January, it was revealed that Yuzuka would be starring in a musical adaptation of Boys Over Flowers which premiered in June.[21] Her final supporting role was in A Fairy Tale.[22] Following Rio Asumi's retirement in late November 2019, Yuzuka officially became the Flower Troupe's top star. She made her debut as top star in Dance Olympia in early 2020.[23] In mid and late 2020, Yuzuka reprised her role as Shinobu Ijuuin in Haikara-san ga Toru with Yuki Hana again.[24]

In early 2021, Yuzuka starred in Nice Work If You Can Get It[25] and Augustus: The Illustrious One,[26] She starred alongside Madoka Hoshikaze for the first time in Sorrowful Cordoba later that year.[27] Yuzuka finished 2021 with Genroku Baroque Rock. The production was suspended mid-run due to COVID-19.[28] In early 2022, she starred in Top Hat as Jerry Travers.[29] Her other productions for 2022 were Years of Pilgrimage[30] and Burning in Firenze.[31] For the first half of 2023, Yuzuka starred in Mayerling[32] and A Battlefield for the Two of Us.[33] Her next performance was in the musical version of Singing Lovebirds.[34] On August 15, Yuzuka and Hoshikaze announced their plans to retire from the Takarazuka Revue.[35] Her final performance was starring in Arc-en-ciel, which ran until May 26, 2024.[36]

Post-Takarazuka Revue[]

In July 2024, Yuzuka announced that she joined Stardust Promotion. She will hold a solo concert in September.[37]
