"Our New Relationship" (二人の新しい関係 (ふたりのあたらしいかんけい) Futari no Atarashī Kankei) is the forty-ninth episode of the anime version of Boys Over Flowers. The episode originally aired on August 17, 1997 in Japan. It was followed by "Time to Call It Quits" on August 24.

Tsukushi Makino passes the exchange program exam. Tsukasa Domyoji learns that his mother rigged it for her to pass. He informs Tsukushi and confesses that he still loves her. Finally, she returns his feelings.

Plot[]

After seeing her name on the pass list for the exchange program, Tsukushi Makino declares "A weed will always survive, wherever it goes." However, as the day wears on, she cannot help but think that it was all her imagination. Meanwhile, the other students are looking at the list in disbelief, particularly Yuriko Asai and her friends. Kazuya Aoike takes up for Tsukushi when the girls question whether she cheated. Sakurako Sanjo stops him, saying "You'll catch their rottenness." The F4 then walk up to view the list. Sojiro Nishikado and Akira Mimasaka are both happy to see that Tsukushi has passed. On the other hand, Tsukasa Domyoji and Rui Hanazawa are strangely quiet. Tsukasa then walks away without a word.

Tsukushi returns to notice board and sighs in relief when she still sees her name on the list. Noticing her, Kazuya, Sakurako, and Makiko Endo all run up to her smiling. He tears up confessing that it will be "lonely" at school without her. Touched, Tsukushi promises to keep in touch with all of them. Shigeru Okawahara, meanwhile, watches Tsukushi and the others with a sad expression on her face. Later, Tsukushi walks through the courtyard and starts reminiscing about Rui playing the violin there. Her thoughts turn to his last exchange with Shizuka Todo. She thinks now that Rui has changed that she has to as well. However, Rui's criticisms about her inability to be honest about her feelings ring through her ears.

Shigeru approaches Tsukushi, asking "Are you really going?" and begs her to stay. Tsukushi firmly says "I've made my decision." She runs off after saying "Take good care of Domyoji." Urara Aoi then walks up to Shigeru, calling her an "interesting person." She questions "Makino is your rival in love, so why would you try to keep her here?" Urara asks her to meet her in the nurse's office if she wants to talk. After school, Tsukushi is looking at the notice board again when Tsukasa starts talking to her. They bicker like they use to. Tsukushi goes to hit him, but Tsukasa dodges and grabs her hand to pull her into an embrace. She initially accepts it but pushes him away, saying "Bye-bye, Domyoji."

That night, Tsukasa thinks of Tsukushi after getting out of the shower. He sees Nishida, whom enters Kaede Domyoji's office to give her his latest report. He says "With Tsukushi Makino out of the picture, Tsukasa's feelings for her should fade." Tsukasa, having overheard, bursts in the room and confronts his mother. He yells at her "I don't consider you my mother!" She responds "Why do you think you're able to live a free and easy life?" Tsukasa responds "I didn't ask to be born into this rotten family!" He then throws his towel at her and storms out of the room. Meanwhile, Tsukushi chats with Yuki Matsuoka over the phone about her future. Tsukasa enters unbidden into her thoughts during their talk.

After hanging up the phone, Tsukushi's fortunetelling toy indicates "trouble ahead." Tsukasa then begins banging on the door and enters the apartment. Once inside, he begs her not to go abroad and reveals that his mother was behind everything. Tsukushi is shocked, but declares that she will go anyway. She pushes him away and tells him "You have Shigeru!," which leads to Tsukasa finally revealing what really happened at the villa. He then says "You're the only one for me." Tsukushi explains that she does not think she can "live in [his] world." Tsukasa professes that he will "leap" into hers. Then he kisses her which she accepts. Tsukushi later thinks "It's starting. Our new relationship."
