At the age of seventeen, Kaga was scouted by director Masahiro Shinoda and Shuji Terayama while she was still in high school. She was given her stage name, Mariko, from Shotaro Akiyama.[2] Kaga made her film debut in Tears on the Lion's Mane in 1962.[1]
