Kaga was born on December 11, 1943 in Kanda-Ogawamachi (now Ogawamachi). From age eight, she was raised in Kagurazaka. Her father, Shiro Kaga (加賀 四郎,Shiro Kaga) was a producer at Daiei Film. She has an older brother whom grew up to become a producer like their father.[1]

At the age of seventeen, Kaga was scouted by director Masahiro Shinoda and Shuji Terayama while she was still in high school. She was given her stage name, Mariko, from Shotaro Akiyama.[2] Kaga made her film debut in Tears on the Lion's Mane in 1962.[1]
Kaga celebrated her birthday on the day of the "Crank Up" ceremony for Hana Yori Dango (2005), which celebrated the end of filming. She was given a cake and the cast sung to her.[3]
