Jeon Ki-sang (Hangul: 전기상, 1960 – January 13, 2018) was a South Korean director and producer. He is well known for his work with Sassy Girl Chun-hyang, My Girl, and Boys Over Flowers. Jeon passed away in early 2018 after being struck by a taxi while crossing the street.



Jeon began working for KBS in 1985. His directing debut was in Salut D'Amour (1994).[1] Jeon went on to direct several drama series, such as Papa (1996) and Bodyguard (2003).[2] He became widely recognized for directing the drama Sassy Girl Chun-hyang (2005).[3] In 2005, he left KBS to become a freelancer. He subsequently partnered with the production company, Kallista, for his following work, My Girl, which aired on SBS the same year.[4][5]

In 2009, Jeon briefly returned to KBS to direct the hit Boys Over Flowers.[6][7] He directed his last drama, To the Beautiful You, in 2012.[8] Jeon attempted to produce the drama titled Gangnam Style, based on the webtoon Fashion King, in 2013. However, it never made it to television.[9] Also in 2013, Jeon was made an adjunct professor at the Korea Art Conservatory.[10]


On January 13, 2018, Jeon was crossing the street around 1:20 AM when he was accidentally hit by a taxi.[11][12] He was immediately taken to Yeouido St. Mary's Hospital, but was ultimately pronounced dead.[13] Jeon's family living abroad flew in to hold his funeral.[14]

  • Following Jang Ja-yeon's suicide in March 2009, it was alleged that she left behind a suicide note with a list of powerful men whom abused her. Internet users claimed that Jeon was included on the list. At the time, he considered quitting Boys Over Flowers or directing altogether, but ultimately carried on after receiving encouragement by the staff and cast members.[15][16]
