General[]
A web page for Hana Yori Dango was launched on TBS's website in September 2005. It initially had a motif with the manga characters, which was later changed to feature the actors from the drama. The website was frequently updated with news, behind the scenes photos, and other information on the drama.[1][2] It received approximately 170 million views, which was a record for TBS at the time.[3] A web page for Hana Yori Dango Returns was opened in November 2006.[4] The Returns web page had over one hundred million views by March 2007.[5] For Hana Yori Dango Final, a web page as well as a blog was created in early 2008.[6]

Hana Yori Dango press conference[]
On October 13, 2005, a press conference for Hana Yori Dango was held at a hotel in Tokyo.[7] It was attended by the series producer Katsuaki Setoguchi,[8] and many of the actors, including Mao Inoue, Jun Matsumoto, Shun Oguri, Shota Matsuda, Tsuyoshi Abe, Megumi Sato, Aki Nishihara, Mayumi Sada, Takako Kato, Susumu Kobayashi, Mako Ishino, and Mariko Kaga.[9] The press conference was included on the Hana Yori Dango box set as a bonus feature.[10]
Returns press conference[]
A press conference for Hana Yori Dango Returns was held on December 5, 2006 at a TBS studio. Matsumoto, Matsuda, Abe, and screenwriter Mikio Satake attended the conference from Japan. Inoue and Oguri were filming in New York and attended via a video call. To avoid technical difficulties, there was a rehearsal before the event.[11] It was broadcast live on the TBS program Ping Pong and was also covered by Niji-Ciao!, Evening 5, and Mino Monta's Morning Bang! at later times.[12]
Final Completion Preview[]

On June 23, 2008, Inoue, Matsumoto, Oguri, Matsuda, and Abe attended a screening of Hana Yori Dango Final at the Nippon Budokan.[13] Setoguchi and director Yasuharu Ishii were also in attendance,[14] while David Ito served as a moderator.[15] Six thousand fans were chosen to attend out of two hundred and fifty thousand applicants.[16]
Final premiere[]
On June 28, 2008, Inoue, Matsumoto, Oguri, Matsuda, Abe, and Ishii attended a premiere event for Hana Yori Dango Final at Toho Cinemas Nichigeki in Yurakucho.[17] It was taped and included on the bonus features of the DVD.[18]
Jet campaign[]
Inoue, Matsumoto, Oguri, Matsuda, and Abe chartered a jet from All Nippon Airways to promote Hana Yori Dango Final across the country.[19] They visited theaters in Sapporo, Nagoya, and Fukuoka on July 12, 2008, and Osaka and Tokyo on July 13.[20] They traveled about 4,560 kilometers over the two days.[21] The campaign was the first of its kind for a Japanese film and was also the largest campaign to be undertaken after the film was already released.[22]
Okinawa event[]
Inoue and Ishii had a stage greeting in Okinawa on July 20, 2008. Aiko, whom performed "KissHug" for Hana Yori Dango Final, was a surprise guest since she was in the area at the time. It was Inoue's and Aiko's first meeting. Five hundred fans attended the event.[23] Matsumoto sent in a message saying "I always listen to 'KissHug' while I'm on the move," which delighted Aiko and the audience.[24]

The final promotional event for Hana Yori Dango Final took place at Yebisu Garden Place on August 21, 2008.[25] The event centered around Inoue and Matsumoto walking down a pink carpet in a mock wedding ceremony.[26] The pair made casts of their handprints which were put on display at Yebisu Garden Cinema from August 23 to September 26.[27] The Venus's Smile tiara was also put on display at the same location.[28]
Final exhibits[]
Costumes were exhibit at Sapporo Stellar Place in Sapporo from June 7 to 27, 2008.[29][30] From June 18 to June 30, an exhibit was held at Isetan Shinjuku.[31] Costumes and photos were on display along with props like the Venus's Smile tiara.[32] Exclusive merchandise was sold at the exhibit, such as a college ring made in collaboration with Inoue.[33] An exhibit was held at Shibuya Loft from June 28 to July 31. Large panels of Tsukushi and the F4 were on display along with the Saturn necklace and Tsukushi's phone. Official goods were also on sale.[34] The exhibit was extended to August 21.[35]
Lecture[]
On August 27, 2008, producer Katsuaki Setoguchi and director Yasuharu Ishii held a lecture at Digital Hollywood University.[36] It was open to the general public as well as DHU students, but only one hundred slots were available and tickets had to be reserved.[37] Setoguchi and Ishii talked extensively about how the drama came about and its success.[38]

Variety show Friend Park had a Christmas special dedicated to Hana Yori Dango Returns, which aired on Christmas Day in 2006. Adidas specially made T-shirts for the drama's stars to wear during the program. Each T-shirt had the name of the actor's character on the back.[58] Returns collaborated with Groovy After School Max! for two special episodes of the variety show, which aired on February 20 and 27, 2007.[59]
Arashi's variety show Himitsu no Arashi-chan had two special episodes to celebrate the release of Hana Yori Dango Final on June 26 and 29, 2008.[60][52]

Returns special[]
A special titled "Hana Yori Dango Returns Special Edition: Makinos' First Family Trip! Adventure in NY" (花より男子2 番外編 牧野家はじめての家族旅行!珍道中 in NY), aired on January 3, 2007.[12] It is a travel program featuring the Makino family's experiences in New York City.[82] The special was edited and released on DVD in June 2007 by TC Entertainment.[83]

"Hana Yori Dango Final Special: Makinos Go on a Luxurious Vacation to Hong Kong and Macao" (花より男子F 化記念 ビンボー牧野家が行く 香港マカオ豪華旅行!!) originally aired on June 22, 2008.[84] The special follows the Makino's family trip to Hong Kong and Macau, visiting places such as Hong Kong Disneyland. It was released on DVD by TC Entertainment.[85] The DVD sold 6,466 copies during the first week of its release.[86]

Prequel episode[]

A second special for Hana Yori Dango Final aired on June 27, 2008. It depicts a story from just before the film is set, while also summarizing the first two series. The special wrapped up with a performance by Arashi. Fans were able to apply to be in the audience.[87]
Other[]
A digest episode, titled "Hana Yori Dango Super Digest" (花より男子スーパーダイジェスト) aired on January 20, 2007. It was made to appeal to fans and to help new viewers jump into the series.[74] Another digest episode, "Hana Yori Dango 2 Navi" (花より男子2ナビ), aired on February 17. It summarized the first seven episode of Hana Yori Dango Returns.[59] A special, titled "Hana Yori Dango Final Navi" (花より男子Fナビ), aired on June 19, 2008.[51] It served as an introduction to the film and re-aired several times up until the film's release date.[52]

In early June 2008, Mao Inoue appeared in a commercial for Meiji Holdings promoting their product, fruit juice gummies (果汁グミ). Inoue was playing her character Tsukushi Makino. Her catchphrase, "Unbelievable!" (

Hana Yori Dango Final collaborated with All Nippon Airways (ANA) for four commercials in June 2008. The commercials were titled "Go! Hong Kong" (GO!香港篇), "Go! America" (GO!アメリカ篇), "Sudden Journey: Hong Kong" (急な旅・香港篇), and "Sudden Journey: America" (急な旅・アメリカ篇), which were also available to watch on ANA's website.[89] Footage from the film was featured in each commercial.[90] ANA sold a travel package to Hong Kong with an option to add a guided tour to see the locations from the film. Customers who submitted their thoughts on the tour and the film on ANA's website were entered to win a replica flower bouquet seen on the Final poster. Depending on add-ons, the price for the package was between 54,800 yen to 93,800 yen.[91]
FamilyMart[]
To celebrate the release of Hana Yori Dango Final, a collaboration with FamilyMart was held from June 24 to July 21, 2008. They released a number of themed food items. Additionally, a campaign to win one of two prizes was held at the same time. Customers who spent over 500 yen on certain products were able to enter. The prizes were a replica of the Saturn necklace, the same one sold by TBS, or an exclusive set of glass cups.[92][93]

Sacas Open Café[]
Sacas Open Cafe at Akasaka Sacas had a temporary Hana Yori Dango Final theme to celebrate the film's release. The collaboration ended on June 29, 2008.[94] Posters and a cardboard cutout of Tsukushi and the F4 were on display along with pictures from the film. There was a statue of TBS's mascot BooBo wearing a Final T-shirt. A limited edition plushie of Boobo was also on sale.[95]
Campaigns[]
Poster rally[]
On December 16, 2006, a total of eighty posters advertising Hana Yori Dango Returns were displayed around Ura-Harajuku. Posters were set up in a total of eleven areas. Called a "poster rally," fans were tasked with finding the nine posters with secret marks. They were entered into a lottery for Hana Yori Dango goods if they took photos of the nine posters and sent them in. The event ended on January 5 when the program started.[96][97] The posters were later reprinted into a booklet and included with the series DVD box set.[98]
Drawing contests[]
The children's website, BooBo Kids, hosted a Hana Yori Dango drawing contest for children. Participants were required to draw an illustration on a postcard and send it in time for March 21, 2007.[99][100] There were 2,080 illustrations sent in. Twelve children were selected as winners and prizes were sent to them.[101] The Grand Prix winner was given a replica of the Saturn necklace.[102] A second contest was held the following year to commemorate the release of Hana Yori Dango Final. The prize of the Grand Prix winner was a Saturn necklace again.[103][104]

Taiwan[]
To promote Hana Yori Dango Final, the website veryWed held two campaigns in the month before the film's premiere on August 29, 2008. Users were able to win exclusive prizes.[105] The Taiwanese distributor Sansui hosted a special screening on August 26. They invited the Taiwanese actors Joe Chen, Sam Wang, Ehlo Huang, and Jason Hsu to attend as the characters.[106][107] Fans were able to enter a lottery to attend the event.[108]

In Bangkok, posters and banners of Hana Yori Dango Final was posted in various locations to promote the premiere on August 28, 2008.[109]
Misc.[]
- Two computer wallpapers were available to download for a limited time on the Hana Yori Dango website until October 28, 2005.[110]
- From October 28 to November 28, billboards advertising "Wish" and Hana Yori Dango were posted on the routes of one hundred schools across Japan.[111]
- To commemorate the ending of Hana Yori Dango, two DVD box sets were given to two fans who applied on the website.[112]
- From December 19 to 25, 2006, advertisements of Hana Yori Dango Returns were on flags, signs, posters, and monitors around Omotesando Hills.[113]
- Returns was advertised on three large screens, including the Harajuku Astrovision from December 5 to 25, Shibuya 109-2 Forum Vision from December 23 to January 5, and Meiji Jingu Movable Vision from December 31 to January 5.[114]
- Users who gave the right answers to a quiz on the Hana Yori Dango Returns website were entered a lottery to win a poster or other goods.[115]
- People were able to apply online to win a press sheet signed by director Yasuharu Ishii. There were two winners total and the deadline was July 9, 2008.[116]
