Tsukasa: "Makino. Have you ever thought of me as a separate individual? Forget everything about my family background and my mother! Have you ever, even once simply thought of me as an individual guy?"
Tsukushi: "Who knows? But, you know what? If I was truly in love with you, I wouldn't leave you like this. Goodbye."
Tsukushi breaks up with Tsukasa

"Painful separation in the rain" (切ない雨の別れ () Setsunai ame no wakare) is an installment of Hana Yori Dango Returns, the sequel of the 2005 drama Hana Yori Dango. The episode aired on March 2, 2007 and was followed by "Lost memories" on March 9.

Tsukushi Makino and Tsukasa Domyoji start dating again. His mother cuts him off financially in retaliation. Later, Shigeru Okawahara's father decides to cancel the merger with Domyoji Group, causing a crisis for Japan's economy.

Kaede Domyoji learns that Tsukasa and Tsukushi Makino are dating again, after seeing them holding hands. She orders him to meet her at her office tomorrow. Later, Rui Hanazawa compares Tsukasa's mother to a "wall" that he and Tsukushi will "have to overcome someday." Tsukasa then declares that he is going to fight. The next day, he meets his mother, who begins speculating why Shigeru Okawahara stepped aside. He tells her that he wants to "create a whole new Domyoji Group along with [Tsukushi]", before leaving. When Nishida walks in, Kaede tells him "it [is] like having your hand bitten by your own dog."

Tsukasa meets with Tsukushi to tell her that they no longer have to sneak around to be together. The two of them then go have lunch. Tsukasa's credit cards all are declined and Tsukushi ends up paying with cash. Afterwards, he feels "pathetic" that Tsukushi had to pay for his meal. She then proposes to show him what "normal people do on a date". After going to a pet store, they run into Nishida, who has just been fired. He encourages Tsukasa to have "confidence" and that "[he] can overcome this." Tsukasa and Tsukushi then meet with Rui, Sojiro Nishikado, and Akira Mimasaka. They believe that Nishida being fired was part his mother's "counterattack." Tsukasa also realizes that his mother cut off his credit cards.

Tsukushi spends the night at Yuki Matsuoka's house. Yuki's parents assure Tsukushi that she may stay as long as she needs to. Meanwhile, Kaede gives Tsukasa "one last chance" to change his mind, to which he responds angrily. She then reveals that Shigeru Okawahara's father has canceled the merger. The next day, Akira and Sojiro visit Tsukushi at work to inform her that Tsukasa has been disinherited. They also reveal that the canceled merger will have a "huge effect." Tsukasa learns about Domyoji Group's layoffs, causing him to dream about Ken Uchida. Tsukushi is having a hard time sleeping. She and Yuki then overhear Yuki's parents discuss their financial woes because of Domyoji Group.

Tsukushi feels responsible for the failed merger and the ways it has affected the nation. The following day, she goes to Kaede's office. Tsukushi begs her to fix the situation and promises to no longer contact Tsukasa. Kaede states that she is "doing all that [she] can." As Tsukushi leaves, Kaede says "do not ever show your face around us again." Meanwhile, Tsukasa tells Rui about his plans to start a new life with Tsukushi, though he acknowledges that it may be tough road ahead. Sick of his gushing, Rui orders Tsukasa to go see Tsukushi. It starts to rain as Tsukasa tries to call her, only to realize that his mother also disconnected his phone. He goes to her job, where Yuki tells him that Tsukushi went to his house.

Having packed her things, Tsukushi leaves the Domyojis mansion. Tsukasa walks up, soaking wet. She suddenly say "let's end this", meaning their relationship. He is shocked and believes that she is joking at first. She then reveals the promise she made with her mother. Tsukasa assumes that she threatened Tsukushi, but she insists that it was her own decision. When she turns around, he asks whether she ever thought of him as an "individual." Tsukushi replies "who knows?" Away from there, she meets Tama, who calls her a "foolish girl" for lying to Tsukasa. Tsukushi boards a train to the fishing village, where she reunites with her family.
