- "To me, coming to a decision is akin to shopping overseas. If you see something you love and don't buy it, you can never have it once you fly home. Then you'll tell yourself 'If only.' This is something I don't wish to do. I hate to have regrets. I want to be in control of my own life. Whether the path is smooth or full of pitfalls, it's my choice."
- —Jing to Shan Cai
The fourth episode (第4集), also known as "Chapter Four" (Chapter 肆), of the Taiwanese drama Meteor Garden originally aired on May 3, 2001 on CTS. The episode was followed by the series' fifth episode on May 10.
At her birthday party, Teng Tang Jing announces her return to France and forgo her family's fortune. Dong Shan Cai convinces Hua Ze Lei to go after her. Later, Shan Cai and Dao Ming Si go on a disastrous first "date."
Plot[]
For Teng Tang Jing's birthday party, Dong Shan Cai's mother provides her and Xiao You with gaudy dresses. Shan Cai refuses at first to be escorted to the party by Chen Qing He due to his flashy car. Shortly after arriving, Xi Men attempts to flirt with Xiao You but Shan Cai swiftly tells him to stay away from her friend. She decides to avoid Dao Ming Si and heads to a bar further away. Mei Zuo orders her a drink. Meanwhile, Qing He is busy collecting signatures from celebrities until Xiao You stops him. They run into Li Zhen wearing the dress Shan Cai gifted her. Si notices this and insults Li Zhen, causing her to leave. Shan Cai is now drunk. She and Mei Zuo head back to the main party as Jing begins her speech.
Jing announces to the party that she is returning to France to pursue further education and fulfill her dreams away from her parents' money. She cuts her hair to demonstrate her resolve. Shan Cai attempts to go after Lei, but Mei Zuo stops her. She then wanders around until she meets Si. They argue and she throws up on him to his horror. He then takes her home. In the morning, Shan Cai's mother is pleased with her "progress." At school, she talks to Lei who has seemingly accepted Jing's decision. Shan Cai then runs into Jing and begs her to stay for Lei's sake. Jing, however, has made up her mind though she sympathizes with Shan Cai's reasoning. Lei, who was watching, is mad at Shan Cai for interfering.
At the airport, everyone excepting Lei shows up to say goodbye to Jing. Shan Cai asks Si if people should "set the person [they like] free," which he calls "stupid" and the same as "not having [the feelings] in the first place." After Jing walks through the gates, Lei finally shows up. Shan Cai calls him a coward and tells him to "go after her". He reveals that he has already bought a ticket and thanks Shan Cai with a kiss on the forehead. The F3 say goodbye to Lei as Shan Cai cries and recalls her memories of Lei. While watching planes take off, Si asks Shan Cai on a date. She does not hear him and asks him to repeat what he said, but he refuses. He later tells her the time and place of the date, which only confuses her.
The following Sunday, Shan Cai repeatedly thinks over Si's words while out shopping with her mother. She eventually makes up her mind to go to him. Shan Cai finds Si soaking wet from waiting in the rain for several hours. Feeling guilty, Shan Cai offers to treat him to tea. However, the place Si chooses is too expensive. They start fighting and Shan Cai drags him to a stairwell, where they calm down and laugh. The pair soon realize that they are locked in the stairwell. Si develops a fever and Shan Cai allows him to lay his head on her lap. They fall asleep for some hours. After waking up, they have a heart-to-heart and she asks him how she can "make it up to [him]." He leans in for a kiss, but a cleaning lady interrupts.
After escorting Si to a cab, Shan Cai heads home, where her extremely worried mother is waiting. She is furious at first, but feels relieved when Shan Cai assures her "nothing happened." Shan Cai's mother and father rejoice that the couple did not reach any "bases," guessing that they simply talked all night. Shan Cai finds herself thinking of Si and wonders whether she has a fever too. The next day, everyone starts congratulating Shan Cai at school. Li Zhen informs her that a picture of her and Si was posted on the school's notice board and now everyone thinks that they are dating. Throughout the day, everyone acts unusually nice to her, even her old enemies, Qian Bai He and Qian Hui.
