"I love you to the point of being absurd. I have eyes only for you. Shan Cai, I know I'm annoying but I want you to know...If you run away, I'll come running after you. No matter where you go, be it hell or the furthest corner of Earth, I'll catch up with you."
—Si confesses his feelings to Shan Cai[src]

Dao Ming Si (Chinese: 道明寺; pinyin: Dàomíng Sì) was the heir of Dao Ming Group. He was leader of the F4, a group that consisted of his best friends, Hua Ze Lei, Xi Men, and Mei Zuo. Si attended Ying De Academy, where he met Dong Shan Cai. He developed a crush on her and pursued a relationship with her, despite numerous obstacles.

Early life[]

"When he was in fifth grade, he used to come home with blood stains on his clothes. At first, I wondered what those stains were of. They turned out to be the blood of those he had beaten up. His parents would then use money to cover up his misbehavior. So he grew from bad to worse."
Ms. Yu discusses Si with Shan Cai[src]

Si was born on May 31, 1980[3] in Taipei, Taiwan.[1] His parents, Cheng and Feng, of the wealthy Dao Ming family, were co-presidents of the well-known company, Dao Ming Group.[4] Si had an older sister named, Zhuang. They spent much of their childhood together, since their parents were often aboard.[5] In kindergarten, Si became friends with Hua Ze Lei, Xi Men, and Mei Zuo, who were also heirs of rich families. They also befriended Teng Tang Jing during this time.[6] Due to his neglectful home life, Si began acting out in fifth grade by beating up other children. His parents, instead of disciplining him, used money to cover up these incidents.[7] Also, sometime during elementary school, he studied aboard in Switzerland where he learned four languages.[8]

High school[]

Si and Xin Xin

"She thinks money is everything? She doesn't care if I am family or not anyway. Let's just suppose I'm dead. She'll see money can't help"
—Si runs away to prove a point to his mother[src]

In his final year of high school, Si got into a particularly bad fight at a bar. He had injured the son of a politician, who called for Si's arrest. His mother was willing to fix the situation as usual, but wanted Si to turn himself in first. Ultimately, Si became angry that she did not tell him this in person, sending their butler, Liu, instead. He ran away and snuck onto a train. Si was recognized by some police officers, forcing him to jump off the train. His leg injured, Si hobble onto a nearby beach, where a little girl named Xin Xin found him. The girl's father, Ah Yuan, brought Si inside and treated his wound. Si planned to depart soon, but Xin Xin insisted on him staying for a few more days.[9]

Si soon became close to Ah Yuan and Xin Xin, spending many days in their company. One day, Ah Yuan scared Xin Xin while attempting to get her to talk. Si asked him why he did not send her to a doctor, to which Ah Yuan replied that he could not afford it. He then revealed to Si that she was not his daughter and that he had saved her from her abusive father. That night, Si went into town to phone Liu. He was recognized again, but managed to evade capture. Worried that Xin Xin would be taken away, Ah Yuan left shortly though he promised to meet Si in a few days. Si then spent several days in jail. On the day he was let out, Si went to go meet with Ah Yuan. Si watched a meteor shower, while waiting for Ah Yuan and Xin Xin.[10]

By college, Si and his friends were attending Ying De Academy and had became known as the F4, an abbreviation of "Flower 4." They were able to do what they pleased thanks to their families being on the school board. Anyone who opposed or offended them was given a red notice and bullied by the other students until they decided to drop out. One of these students was Ah Shu.[11][12] Meanwhile, Zhuang had married and left Taiwan to live abroad.[6]

Meeting Shan Cai[]

Si shocked after being punched by Shan Cai

Dao Ming Si: "There's nothing in this world which money cannot buy. If it pleases me, I may even buy the Eiffel Tower for you. Besides, a man like me is a good choice for you."
Shan Cai: "You have no common sense! Don't take me for a fool! You want to buy me like a piece of merchandise? Listen, I'm someone whom no amount of money can buy!"
— Shan Cai refuses Si's offer to become his girlfriend[src]

Si first became aware of Dong Shan Cai after her friend, Li Zhen, accidentally dropped a box on him. Li Zhen attempted to apologize, but he pushed her aside. Shan Cai then stood up to Si for not accepting her apology. He subsequently gave Shan Cai a red notice. However, unlike their previous victims, Shan Cai gave Si a red card and declared war on the F4. He ordered two students to "scare" Shan Cai. They actually attempted to assault her, which Si had not ordered. The day after, Shan Cai punched him in retaliation for the incident. After school, Si sat in his jacuzzi for a long time thinking. He later had her kidnapped her from school. Si's servants gave her a makeover at his home, where he asked her to be his girlfriend. She refused, informing him that she was not someone who could be bought.[11]

The following day, Si tried to discuss what to do next with Shan Cai but the others were uninterested. She then ran up to Si, blaming him for a rumor and informed him that she was a virgin. He misinterpreted this to mean that she was interested in him. Sometime later, Si protected Shan Cai from the bullies, Qian Hui and Bai He. She rebuffed him and told him that she hated everything about him. Later, Jing returned from France and Shan Cai's friend, Chen Qing He, transferred to Ying De. Si became jealous of Qing He and sent him a red card, which caused him to be bullied by the other students. Shan Cai and Qing He were then chased by a mob of students into the path of the F4 and Jing. Lei stepped in to save Shan Cai, which angered Si and caused him to sever his friendship with Lei.[6]

After hearing that Shan Cai was sick, Si visited her house. Her mother and father invited him to stay for dinner. Afterwards, he offered to pay for Shan Cai to go on the spring break trip to Hawaii. She announced that she was going on a cruise with Qing He instead. Si later bought the ship. On the first night, Si hosted a party and Shan Cai accidentally kissed him. Qing He, upset about the kiss, later challenged Si to a swimming contest which Si won easily. The two then made sashimi together and were joined by Shan Cai. Back at school, Si was going to make up with Lei when he saw him with Shan Cai on the roof. Bai He and Qian Hui showed him a video of Lei and Shan Cai, which enraged him. He later found Shan Cai alone and forcefully kissed her. When she started crying, Si calmed down and stopped.[4]

Growing close to Shan Cai[]

Si reveals his feelings to Shan Cai

Shan Cai: "Surely you're not jealous?"
Si: "I am jealous! Very jealous! I can't wait to kill him! It's because I love you. I really love you."
— Si confesses his feelings to Shan Cai[src]

As an apology, Si sent Shan Cai a dress to wear to Jing's birthday party. They did not see each other again until that party. After Jing's announcement, a drunk Shan Cai walked up to Si. They argued and she ended up throwing up on his suit. Si brought her home. Later, Si and the others later said goodbye to Jing at the airport. When Lei decided to follow her, he and Si made up. Si then asked Shan Cai on a date, while they were all watching the airplanes take off. She asked him to repeat what he said, but he refused. Si later told her the time and place to meet. He waited in the rain for four hours, before she finally arrived. She offered to treat him, but the place he chose was expensive. While arguing, they became stuck in a stairwell. Si had developed a fever and Shan Cai allowed him rest his head on her lap until the morning.[13]

After photos of them together were posted at school, everyone began to think that Si and Shan Cai were dating. He made no move to clear the misconception. The next day, he waited for Shan Cai to have lunch together. He later saw her with a foreigner. Si became angry, but Shan Cai said that they were not dating. A couple days later, Qian Hui showed him photos of Shan Cai and the foreigner going into a hotel. Si was upset and spent the night drinking. He went near Shan Cai's house and mistook Li Zhen for Shan Cai and kissed her. In the morning, she confessed her feelings for him. Si realized that he loved Shan Cai and went to school to save her from the bullies. At his home, he told her his feelings and then kissed her. The next morning, Si got revenge on Shan Cai's tormentors though she soon stopped him.[8]

Rift in the F4[]

Si discovers Shan Cai and Lei together

"Am I so detestable? Do you love Lei so much? Why must it be Lei? Why must it be my best friend? I feel like such a fool. Why am I in love with such a girl?"
—Si pleads with Shan Cai before the basketball match[src]

When Lei returned from France, Si claimed that he and Shan Cai were dating. Meanwhile, he obtained the address of the person who posted the photos of Shan Cai. She was devastated to find out that it was Li Zhen. To cheer her up, Si later took Shan Cai on a surprise trip to Okinawa along with the F3. Si shared a room with her, but stated that he would sleep on the couch. That night, Si woke up and found that Shan Cai was gone. He became worried, but she claimed that she just went for a walk. In the morning, Si became suspicious when Lei had Shan Cai's phone. His found them kissing on the beach that night. Si punched Lei, before telling Shan Cai never to speak to him again. He left early the next morning.[5]

Si kicked Lei out of the F4 and replaced him with Qing He, much to Xi Men's and Mei Zuo's annoyance. He then declared that he would have Lei and Shan Cai expelled from school. In the meantime, Zhuang had returned home and woke up Si in the middle of the night. She then beat up him for drinking and breaking things around the house. The next day, Si went to the principal but was intercepted by Zhuang. She suggested another solution, playing a game of basketball to determine what would happen. That night, Si met Shan Cai outside her house. He said that he would call off the match if she said she loved him, but she remained silent. The day after, Si's team was winning when he he had a change of heart and ended it. A few days later, Si left Taiwan to join his parents in New York.[12]

Xiao Shun incident[]

Si after protecting Shan Cai

Shan Cai: "Fool! Why didn't you hit back? There were four of them. You could beat them hands down."
Si: "Silly girl. I would have lost if I had retaliated. Then I wouldn't have been able to rescue you. It was easy for me to deal with them. But I had to restrain myself. I couldn't hit back...because my only objective was to protect you."
— Si allows himself to be beaten to protect Shan Cai[src]

Si returned to Taiwan within two days since Lei had told him that he believed Shan Cai actually liked him just before he left. He went to see Shan Cai at her new place and spent the night at her parents urging. She later borrowed one million dollars from Si to pay off her family's debt. He told her to repay him by meeting him the following Saturday. That day, Shan Cai brought along a child which annoyed Si. They went to zoo and the day was going well until Shan Cai said "Why are you still so kind to me?" Si called her "stupid" and stormed off. Later, Si went to see Shan Cai at her new job, but flew into a jealous rage when he saw her with Xiao Shun. Over the next few days, the F3 urged Si to apologize. He became angry again after seeing Shan Cai in a magazine with Xiao Shun, prompting him to confess his feelings again.[14]

After Shan Cai ignored his confession, Si went to Huadong to relax without telling his friends. Shan Cai was kidnapped shortly before he returned home. He received a phone call from Xiao Shun, who told him to come and meet him alone. Si did as he said and allowed Xiao Shun's co-conspirators to beat him up in order to protect Shan Cai. After his attackers left, Si passed out and was taken to the hospital. Xi Men, Mei Zuo, and Lei visited him, before leaving to get revenge for Si. Xiao Shun arrived and reached an understanding with Si. The next day, the F3 confronted Shan Cai about Si's feelings. She hesitated, but eventually said that he was like a "dog" to her. Despite being disappointed about this comparison, Si later invited her to his birthday party and voiced his intentions to introduce her to his mother.[15]

Engagement to Xiao Zi[]

Si with Xiao Zi

Xiao Zi: "I can't call this a date! This is no different from the way we use to treat each other. I looked forward to this date and dressed up specially for the occasion. But you walked away without so much as taking a look at me. I wonder why we're dating. If you call this a date, I'm disappointed."
Si: "Okay, got it. What should I do now?"
— Si and Xiao Zi start dating[src]

At his birthday party, Si sat back as his mother attempted to intimidate Shan Cai, who was able to hold her own. He declared his feelings for Shan Cai, which made his mother angry. Si's friends then enabled him to escape with Shan Cai. Some time later, Si was accosted by his mother's bodyguards and brought to her hotel. Shan Cai was ushered into the room, before his mother introduced him to his new fiancée, He Yuan Zi. Si ran away, but grabbed Xiao Zi's hand by accident instead of Shan Cai's. Si attempted to explain the misunderstanding but Shan Cai remained obstinate. He met her the following night to say that "nothing happened" between him and Xiao Zi. Shan Cai encouraged Si to date Xiao Zi, causing him to slap her out of anger. He then went home, thinking that their relationship was really over now.[16]

Si subsequently asked Xiao Zi to be his girlfriend, promising to try to love her. On their first date, Si's standoffish behavior annoyed Xiao Zi. She told him that he needed to try harder and he agreed. Some days later, Xiao Zi came to Si's school and asked him to kiss her as proof "that [he] no longer loved Shan Cai." He obliged her. That afternoon, he and Xiao Zi bumped into Lei and Shan Cai at a café. Xiao Zi invited them to stay at her family's villa. When Shan Cai passed out in the hot springs, Si rushed in to save her but Lei reached her first. That night, Si confessed to Xiao Zi that he could not love her. She did not take it well at first. Si later asked his mother to end the engagement. She became angry, leading to an argument. Si's mother ultimately had no choice once Xiao Zi's mother requested to end it as well.[17]

Dating Shan Cai[]

Si hugging Shan Cai after giving her a necklace

"Do you know how anxious I am? Days pass by and our deadline draws near. But everything seems to be going awry. Whether you're trying your best to give in to me...or I'm doing all I can to give in to you, nothing seems to be going smoothly. I'm even wondering whether it's the end of our relationship."
—Si voices his worries to Shan Cai[src]

Later, Xi Men and Mei Zuo told Si about Shan Cai standing up to his mother, which revived his hopes. He went to her apartment, only to learn that her landlord had suddenly evicted her. Si eventually found her and brought her to stay at his home. His mother, in the meantime, had left for London. Ms. Yu, the former head housekeeper, agreed to let Shan Cai stay as long as she worked as Si's personal maid. The following night, Si took Shan Cai out onto his balcony to see a meteor shower. He then gave her a necklace and kissed her, before asking her to date him. The next morning, Shan Cai agreed to his terms of a two month trial. Later, she invited Si on a double date with her friend, Xiao You. Si refused at first, but showed up anyway. It ended badly after Si punched Xiao You's boyfriend, Zhong Ze, for suggesting that he cheat on Shan Cai.[18]

Shan Cai and Si later made up, after she found out what really happened. Some days later, Shan Cai tried to convince Si to follow Xiao You and Xi Men on their date. Si sent someone to tail them and they soon heard that Xi Men and Xiao You were at a hotel. Si and Shan Cai rented a room there and they accidentally ended up having a romantic dinner. A small squabble lead to her leaving. Feng then came in the room to greet her son, before going home. She became enraged upon finding Shan Cai there. Lei later suggested for Si to move out to "reduce friction" in the house. However, Shan Cai did not want Si to protect her, saying that the arrangement would give them an "unbalanced relationship." Si, though somewhat annoyed, accepted her reasoning.[7]

Shan Cai leaves[]

Si after Shan Cai leaves him

Shan Cai: "I'm leaving your house today."
Si: "What is happening? Didn't we have a date today? Don't you remember it? You wanted a balanced relationship and told me not to move out. You didn't want my protection, because you had decided on a break-up."
Shan Cai: "No! I meant what I said at the time. I wanted to start a happy relationship with you."
— Shan Cai breaks up with Si[src]

That night, Shan Cai waited for Si outside his home in the rain to break up with him. Si refused to accept it, even after she told him his mother forced her. He then asked her, "have you ever loved me?", which she answered "never". After she left, Si became depressed and began acting like his "old self". One night, he got drunk and refused to let the F4 take him home. He was almost hit by a car, but was saved by Qing He. Mei Zuo and Xi Men later attempted to cheer him up by organizing a party. It only annoyed Si, which caused him and Xi Men to start fighting. After Si's and Xi Men's fight, his friends decided to stop their efforts to make him happy.[19]

After Qing He learned where Shan Cai was, Lei asked Si to go with them to retrieve her. Si refused to go, saying "she left [him] of her accord." When she came back to school, she began avoiding Si. He later took Lei's advice to make a "clean break" from Shan Cai and told her that they would "go [their] separate ways" from then on. Shortly later, Lei told Si he would be pursuing Shan Cai romantically. Despite taking the news well initially, Si broke down crying about it, while talking to Xi Men and Mei Zuo. The following night, Xi Men told Si to accept that he and Shan Cai were no longer together. Si refused, finally admitting that "losing Shan Cai" was akin to "losing [his] strength to breathe." Si then left a gift for Shan Cai at her home.[20]

Ya Men's interference[]

Si confronts Ya Men

Si: "Shan Cai, don't go with him! I can't live without you. I can't afford to lose you. Without you, I don't know what will become of me. I can't live a normal life without you. If I really lose you, I don't know what I'll do."
Ya Men: "You're not a kid. Don't be childish, okay? Don't upset Shan Cai."
Si: "I am a kid! I used to do whatever I wanted. But now, I'm at a loss as to what to do. Shan Cai, tell me what I should do to get a chance to continue loving you."
— Si pleads with Shan Cai to return to him[src]

Lei left for Japan in the morning and Si arrived at the last minute to bid him goodbye. Si later tried to talk with Shan Cai, but became annoyed when she mentioned his "cousin". He then left the café in a huff, when she told him about her blind date. At home, Si told Mei Zuo that he did not have a cousin. They asked Yu Sao, who confirmed his existence. Later that night, Mei Zuo and Si questioned Xiao Zi for details about the blind date. They went to Shan Cai's home, where Si apologized for his earlier comments. The next day, Si and Mei Zuo asked Yu Sao to introduce them to his cousin, Qing Yong. However, he did not look as Shan Cai had described.[21]

After Ya Men revealed that Feng had hired him to seduce Shan Cai, she began ignoring Si's calls and tried to act normal around him at school. Si later confronted Ya Men, saying "she's mine." The following day, Qing He told Si that he saw Shan Cai and Ya Men together. Si raced to Shan Cai and pleaded with her to not go with Ya Men. She then boarded a bus with Ya Men as Si ran after the bus. However, Shan Cai got off the bus and embraced Si. They began dating again, but she requested to keep it a secret to avoid his mother's wrath. Si was initially angry at the idea, though he reluctantly agreed. After Shan Cai's house was broken into, Si rented the home next to hers to make sure she was safe.[22]

Dating Shan Cai again[]

Si talking to Shan Cai through his bedroom door

Si: "Why must we give up? If I could give up, I would've done so the first time we broke up. I don't want to think about it. We will definitely be together."
Shan Cai: "I get it. We will definitely be together."
— Si convinces Shan Cai to not give up[src]

Si had a hard time sleeping at his new house and only spent a few hours a night there. Shan Cai became upset by this and told him that he was intruding in her "world" for fun. However, they resolved the issue after talking it out. Later, Si and Shan Cai went on a date. All of Si's credit cards were rejected, which caused him to become suspicious of his mother. After dropping Shan Cai off at her home, Si was kidnapped by his mother's security. Feng arranged his engagement to Xiao Zi again and locked him in his room to force him to comply. He banged on his door for hours and eventually refused all food and drink. In order to calm him down, Si was heavily sedated.[23]

The F3 attempted to save him, while he was knocked out. They were caught by Si's mother, who happened to be in his room at the time. The following morning, Yu Sao tried to urge Si to eat, but he refused again.[23] Shan Cai later tried to break up with Si in order to get him eat. However, Si convinced her to continue fighting for their relationship. He continued his fast, while Shan Cai decided to wait outside his home for him. In the meantime, Zhuang returned home to intervene. Zhuang's words became the catalyst for Feng giving up on her scheme. Shan Cai and Si were then reunited. Sometime later, while on a date, Shan Cai was finally able to put her feelings for Si into words.[24]

Physical appearance[]

Si, like the other members of the F4, was considered good-looking. His most noticeable feature was his hair, which stuck up straight and was often described as looking similar to a "pineapple". He sometimes had his stylist flat iron his hair, though it only lasted for about eight hours. Si often wore bandanna-like headbands during this time. In New York, Si got a new hairstyle, which allowed his brown hair to finally stay straight.

The F4 were all about 180 centimeters tall, making them seventeen centimeters taller than Shan Cai. Si weighed about 72 kilograms and had a lean build. His wardrobe consisted of mostly tank-tops and open collar shirts. He also often wore a black necklace.

Personality and traits[]

"If apologies could help, would we still need the police?"
—Si's oft-quoted line, when someone apologizes to him[src]

Si was, in general, a spoiled, hot-headed, rich boy. His personality was largely the result of his lonely childhood with the only positive influence being his older sister, despite her being somewhat violent. Si's parents were absent from his life and he ran wild doing whatever he pleased. He was easily angered and had a menacing presence, which caused people to automatically apologize to him. His temper could be compared to Shan Cai's as the two often argued. Si also believed that he was better than most people, because of his wealth. His opinions changed and he eventually became a softer and considerate person, thanks to Shan Cai's influence.

His friends often teased him about his poor Chinese, despite it being his native language. He tended to confuse similar phrases or words, leading him to say the wrong thing. Nevertheless, Si was also somewhat proficient in several other languages, including English, German, Italian, and French. However, like his Chinese, Si was known to confuse words in English, such as 'size' with 'sense'.

His full name, Dao Ming Si (道明寺), is made up of the three characters in his manga counterpart's surname. Si's given name (寺) translates to "temple," "monastery," or "place of worship."[26] His surname means "way," "path," or "road" (道)[27] and "bright," "clear," or "manifest" (明).[28] Additionally, Si is often referred to as "Ah Si" (阿寺). Ah (阿) is a prefix often added to names to denote familiarity or friendliness.[29]
