- "When I read the article that said he'd found someone he was willing to give up his family name for, I decided to leave my family and come here. I head that you were entering the Teen of Japan contest, so I entered it too, because I wanted to compete with you. That's why I want to fight this out with you to the end."
- —Ayano to Tsukushi
Chapter 69 (
Tsukushi Makino learns about Seinosuke Amakusa's fiancée Ayano Kurimaki, whom entered Teen of Japan to go up against her. Tsukasa Domyoji gives her a last bit of encouragement, before the second round begins.
Plot[]
The crowd murmurs indignantly, wondering why Tsukushi Makino is still in the running for Teen of Japan. Yuriko Asai becomes upset and Minako Yamano assures her that Tsukushi cannot possibly past the knowledge category. Tsubaki Domyoji too speculates on Tsukushi's ability to pass the next round since it will be "what the upper class is supposed to know." Sojiro Nishikado suggests they go give Tsukushi a "pep talk," though he really only wants to talk to Ayano Kurimaki.
Backstage, Tsukushi chats with Ayano about Seinosuke Amakusa. Sonoko Maekawa and her friends become annoyed by her attitude. They spout off several unwarranted criticisms and insinuations. Ayano stands up for Tsukushi by saying "Do you really have time to be saying these things. Upset, Sonoko mentions Ayano's engagement to Seinosuke and says "[He's] not paying any attention to you at all!" Once Sonoko leaves, Ayano reveals to Tsukushi that she entered Teen of Japan to go up against her.
Tsukasa and the others enter the dressing room. Tsukushi thanks him for earlier and then quickly looks away. Tsukasa becomes irritated at her avoiding eye contact, but still wishes her "good luck." The second round begins, which will test the girls' English ability. Each girl will have tea and chat with judge, Jody Grand. Ayano's round is successful, while Sonoko is disqualified after dropping a tea cup. During Sakurako Sanjo's turn, Tsubaki remarks that she "lacks refinement." Tsukushi is then finally called upon.
