"We will now begin the beauty competition. The true beauty should combine an understanding of today's fashion trends with a discreet self-presentation. What matters are not her physical attributes but how she makes the most of them!"
The Teen of Japan contest begins with the beauty portion. Tsukushi Makino is out of her element amongst the designer clothes. She manages to impress the judges with her individuality and makes it to the next round.
Tsukushi Makino tries to calm herself down just before she has to go on stage for Teen of Japan. Tsukasa Domyoji and the others settle themselves in the audience, causing a stir among the girls. Sakurako Sanjo tells Tsukushi to "pull [her]self together" as the emcee begins introductions. The four judges are named first, followed by the six students from Eirin Academy and Eitoku Academy. Tsukushi's family, whom happens to be watching the broadcast, scream in surprise when she appears onscreen.
For the first round, the emcee announces that the contestants will have to choose clothing that expresses their individuality. Tsukushi feels lost, unlike the others who ravenously begin picking out clothes. Seeing her hesitation, Tsukasa quickly writes one million yen on a T-shirt and holds it above his head. Security, however, stops him so he shouts "Quit fooling around and just do it!" Spurred on, Tsukushi picks three random articles of clothing. Just before putting on her dress, she accidentally rips it.
The contestants walk the stage to show off their clothes. Ayano Kurimaki and Sonoko Maekawa are given praise, while Sakurako's outfit is described as having a "daring cut." When Tsukushi walks up, the audience laughs. Judge Arthur Smith, who was unimpressed with the others, stands up and praises her individuality. The girls then line up, preparing for the judges' results. Ayano, Sonoko, Sakurako, and Tsukushi all pass on to the next round. Tsukushi stands still for a minute, surprised that she passed.
