Not to be confused with Chapter 3 of Boys Over Flowers Season 2.

"You call yourself a man?! You aren't even worth contempt!"
Tsukushi kicks Tsukasa in the face

Chapter 3 (第3話 () ) of Boys Over Flowers was first published in April 1992 in the manga magazine, Margaret. The chapter continues the conflict of the previous chapter and was followed by chapter four in May 1992.[1] It was later republished in volume one of the series.

Tsukushi Makino returns to school with a new confidence, easily fighting back against her bullies. She then kicks Tsukasa Domyoji for setting those students to assault her. The following day, Tsukasa kidnaps her on the way to school.

Plot[]

Four students report to Tsukasa Domyoji that they failed to assault Tsukushi Makino, because Rui Hanazawa stepped in. At school, Tsukushi arrives in a state of anger due to yesterday's incident. She quickly foils the other students attempts to bully her, before spotting Tsukasa. Tsukushi kicks him in the face and declares, "you call yourself a man", before running away. The incident reminds him of his sister and sends him into a state of shock. Tsukushi is nervous about the consequences, but still happy.

Akira Mimasaka and Sojiro Nishikado take Tsukasa to their classroom, where they discuss his actions. They leave him with Rui in order to be on time for their dates. Later, Tsukushi looks for Rui at the emergency stairwell. She eventually finds him in the music room. He stops playing his violin, when she enters the room. She thanks him again for helping her earlier, but he brushes her off. Tsukushi promises to look for him again at the emergency exit, to which he replies that he "[will not] go there again."

The next day, several Eitoku students start saying good morning to Tsukushi. Tsukushi overhears them talking about it and realizes that it is just a game to them. She finds it somewhat flattering, after they call her "cool" and "amazing". Another student communicates her newfound popularity to Tsukasa, who plans a new course of action. The following morning, a group of men grab Tsukushi and force her into a car. Tsukasa, who is standing nearby, tells her that "it's payback time".

Arc: Red Slip Troubles

  • After getting kicked by Tsukushi, Tsukasa calls out for his sister whom was shown previously kicking him in much the same way.
  • The F4's classroom is labeled "3-A." This is perhaps the only time they were actually shown in class.
  • Tsukushi sees Rui playing the violin, which becomes strongly linked with his character.

  • The chapter was first published in Margaret with a black and white illustration of Tsukushi as the opening. It depicts Tsukushi going from depress in her braids and uniform to letting her hair down and being herself.[2]

  • Tsukasa confuses the word "mentsu" (メンツ), meaning "face" or "honor"[3] with "mencho" (メンチョ) which refers to a "boil" in the Kansai region.[4] Viz's edition translates "mencho" to "zit" and "mentsu" to "act of vengeance".
  • Tsukasa calls the students "octopuses" and that they should "die." In the English version, he says "You've got the backbone of an octopus" and tells them to leave.
  • Tsukushi cracks the glass of a student's Rolex watch. If you look closely, the watch actually says "Ronlex."
  • Akira has a key to the Imperial Hotel which is a famous hotel in Tokyo.
  • The car that Tsukasa kidnaps Tsukushi with is a Benz, referring to the automotive brand, Mercedes-Benz.

  • Viz mistranslates Sojiro's line to Akira telling him he has a "mother complex." Akira responds that he is just a "lady killer." However, both use the "he" pronoun, making it seem like they are referring to Tsukasa instead.
