Not to be confused with Chapter 2 of Boys Over Flowers Season 2.

Tsukushi: "I'm a weed! You can pull a weed and mow it down, but it always grows back stronger than ever!"
Chieko: "I know...but why do you keep saying that every morning?"
Tsukushi gets ready for school.

Chapter 2 (第2話 () ) of Boys Over Flowers by Yoko Kamio was published in Margaret No.9 in April 1992. It continues the story of the first, which was published in March 1992.[1] The chapter was included in volume one of the series. It marks the first appearance of Tsukushi Makino's brother, Susumu.

The student body of Eitoku Academy begin to bully Tsukushi, after she receives a red card from the F4. The harassment reaches a boiling point, when three students hired by Tsukasa Domyoji attempt to assault her.

Plot[]

After eating breakfast with her family, Tsukushi Makino loudly declares "I'm a weed" and heads off to Eitoku Academy. She wants to stand strong against the F4, but loses her nerve and attempts to sneak into school. Tsukasa Domyoji and Sojiro Nishikado see her yet do nothing, which makes her uneasy. In her classroom, Tsukushi notices that her desk is missing and then someone throws an egg at her. Her homeroom teacher realizes that she is being bullied, but does nothing to help her.

Tsukushi tries not to cry, until she reaches the emergency stairwell, where she runs into Rui Hanazawa. He tells her that he had heard her yell at the stairwell before. After Tsukushi asks about the F4, Rui informs her that he has no interest "in other people's problems." Tsukushi, hurt by his comment, quickly returns to her classroom. There she sees her desk, which Makiko Endo has returned, despite being frightened of the F4. Makiko apologizes for not helping Tsukushi.

The F4, except Rui, meet at a night club. Sojiro and Akira Mimasaka discuss Tsukushi, comparing her to Tsukasa's sister. Annoyed, Tsukasa plans his next move. After school the next day, a student approaches Tsukushi and attempts to subdue her with the aid of three others. Tsukushi punches one of them, before fleeing. They catch her when she trips. However, Rui walks by and forces them to let her go. She thanks him and he brusquely replies, "Don't misunderstand. I just don't like this kind of stuff."

Arc: Red Slip Troubles

  • Tsukushi refers to herself as a "weed" for the first time. Her name is most likely a reference to the field horsetail which has become a motif for her character.
  • Tsukushi returns to the emergency stairwell to yell out her frustrations and finds Rui there for the first time. The location subsequently becomes their meeting spot.
  • Makiko makes her final appearance in this chapter. She is mentioned again in chapter two hundred and twenty-one as having "disappeared."
  • Tsubaki is depicted in a short flashback, which shows her kicking Tsukasa.

  • The chapter was originally published with a full-color illustration, depicting the F4.[2] It was subsequently used for the back cover of volume one.

  • In the original version, Tsukasa mixes up the words "privacy" (プライバシー) and "pride" (プライド). In Viz's edition, he instead uses the French word "malheur", meaning misfortune,[3] confusing it with "honneur" (honor).
