Tsukushi: "Miss Todo, I...I don't think I can pull this off."
Shizuka: "Don't be ridiculous. You look very cute. Now, let's go."
Shizuka dresses Tsukushi for the party

The eleventh chapter (第11話 () ) of Yoko Kamio's Boys Over Flowers was published on August 20, 1992 in Margaret. It was followed by the twelfth chapter in the nineteenth issue of Margaret. The chapter is the second in the "Atami Arc."[1] It was later included in the second volume of the series.

Tsukushi Makino goes to stay at Kazuya Aoike's villa in Atami. Things take a turn when Tsukasa Domyoji arrives with a large crowd of Eitoku students. Tsukushi later lives out her Cinderella fantasy at a party on Tsukasa's yacht.

Plot[]

Tsukushi Makino is on the train to Atami with her friend, Kazuya Aoike, and her parents, Chieko and Haruo. They will be staying at Kazuya's villa, while the other students of Eitoku Academy are going to Hawaii. Tsukushi is somewhat disappointed that she will not see Rui Hanazawa during the summer. Upon arrival, they begin sightseeing, including visiting the local shrine and the beach. A yacht approaches the beach and Tsukushi comments, "That silhouette seems awfully familiar."

Much to Tsukushi's horror, the silhouette turns out to be Tsukasa Domyoji. He calls Atami the place "to be," as Eitoku students come out of their cabins, including Rui Hanazawa and Shizuka Todo. Shizuka invites Tsukushi to the party and offers her a dress, when Yuriko Asai and her friends complain that she will not be properly attired. Tsukushi refuses at first, until Shizuka enlists Rui's encouragement. Her parents also insist that Tsukushi go to party, so she can get close to Tsukasa.

In Shizuka's cabin, she first gives Tsukushi a makeover, before lending her a dress and a pair of shoes. Tsukushi feels ridiculous for a bit, but then imagines it as a Cinderella fantasy. Everyone gasps when Tsukushi enters the party. Tsukushi's eyes fall on Rui, who says "You look nice." Someone turns off the lights suddenly and chaos ensues. Tsukushi trips and falls onto someone, accidentally touching his lips with hers. The lights turns on and Tsukushi realizes that she has just kissed Tsukasa.

  • Chieko and Haruo reminisce about visiting Atami for their honeymoon.
  • Kazuya's family's boat is named Aoike-maru (青池丸).
  • Tsukasa makes a second attempt at straightening his hair with successful results this time.
  • The kissing game is called "A Shot in the Dark! Kiss Time" (暗闇でドッキリ!キスタイム), while in the English version it is not named though the line "The cloak of darkness" is used.

  • Chapter eleven was opened with a black-and-white illustration of Tsukushi. She is pictures sitting down with two men, whose faces are obscured, standing nearby.[2] The illustration is used on a transition before chapter eleven in volume two.

  • The Makinos' and Kazuya arrive in Atami at Atami Station. During their trip, they visit Kinomiya Shrine and Himenosawa Park.
  • Minako is wearing a shirt with a symbol similar to Chanel's, however the shirt actually says "Channel."
  • Shizuka's make-up palette has the logo from Yves Saint Laurent on it.
  • Yuriko comments that Tsukushi's dress is by Harriet Selling. Kamio may be referencing a real fashion designer of that name, who has been working in the industry since the mid-1980s.[3][4]
